Uganda has registered a 16% reduction on maternal death for over the last 5 years.
However with these significant numbers the leading causes of deaths are unchanged.
In his address during the 4th annual safe motherhood conference held under the theme strengthening community engagement for sustainable maternal and child health.Dr Richard Mugahi the commissioner Reproductive and infant health at the ministry of health said the ministry should focus on addressing delays in care to improve maternal and new born survival.
Dr Mugahi said the biggest contributers to maternal death are hypertension, abortion and sepsis especially in adolescents and obstetric hemorrhage.
He noted that as the ministry they are faced with challenges of lack of staff, professional misconduct, lack of expertise, absence of critical HR and lack of medical suppliers.
He however stressed that there is need to strengthen implementation and monitoring of services to safe motherhood and also improve majorly community health care services
